Tetherline

(Music by Thomasina, Words by Thomasina, Joan Spear and Steven Levy)

In January of 1998, I read the book “Into Thin Air” by Jon Krakauer. During this time, I also found a lump in my breast. The uncertainty and fear I lived with for a month before I found out it was benign made me feel like I was climbing my own Mt. Everest. It’s hard to separate Krakauer’s story and my experience in this song. Many thanks to the extraordinary tetherlines of love I have in my life. I am grateful to you all...

I come to this mountain, so far from my home
On a journey to the edge here to face a great unknown
Ascension to the summit fronts a wall of fear
I shout to the high peaks, ”The way is not so clear.”

Struggling to the endpoint; feeling so alone
This barren and jagged land is made of snow and stone
Dangling from this precipice, I’m gasping in thin air

But, your love is a tetherline holding me in place
Grounding me securely beyond this time and space
I hear your voice come echoing across the wide expanse
Into the wild interior;
Into the no-man’s-land

To brave this great mountain takes courage and will
Crawling on the Icefall, the battle is uphill
Can I continue with so far to go?
An avalanche of memories leaves relics in the snow

Storm clouds come rushing in, the wind has me unfurled
I’m whirling like a dervish at the top of the world
Struggling for footholds, I may be blown away

But, your love is a tetherline holding me in place
Grounding me securely beyond this time and space
I hear your voice come echoing across the wide expanse
Into the wild interior;
Into this no-man’s-land

I come from this mountain weary and worn
Surviving the challenge, I know I am transformed
Descending from the summit, I pass that wall of fear
Shouts from the high peaks, make it all so clear

That love is a tetherline holding me in place
Grounding me securely beyond this time and space
I hear your voices echoing across the wide expanse
Into my wild interior;
Into this no-man’s-land
Love is a tetherline holding us in place
Grounding us securely beyond this time and space
Hear those voices echoing across the wide expanse
Into our wild interiors;
Into this no-man’s-land
